AVCHD (Advanced High Definition Video Coding) is a file-based format for high definition video digital recording and playback. It is packaged into the MPEG transport stream with H.264 and Dolby AC-3, with a set of constraints designed around the camcorders. The format was developed jointly by Sony and Panasonic and was introduced primarily for use in high definition consumer camcorders in 2006. Related specifications include the AVCCAM and NXCAM Professional variants. Favorable similarities between AVCHD and HDV and XDCAM EX solidified AVCHD 's reputation as a format suitable to professional use. AVCHD uses the H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC format for video encoding, allowing a number of normal, high definition, and stereoscopic (3D) video resolutions.
